Here’s What We’ll Cover:
Distance – Dog begins working slightly away from the handler, usually within a few feet. Focus is on building confidence to leave the handler and work independently.
Exterior – Simple outdoor searches in controlled environments (like grassy areas or patios), often on-leash.
Not So Helpful Handler – Dog learns to work even if the handler unknowingly blocks odor or misguides them; beginning to build independence.
Ground Hides – Hides are placed low or just above ground level in simple, visible containers or objects.
Here’s What We’ll Cover:
Start Lines – Dog begins showing focus and direction off the start line. Handler starts observing how odor may be accessed from the beginning. How routines affect the search.
Know Your Numbers – Handler gains awareness of how their dog solves slightly more complex odor problems and begins to track timing and search effort.
Surfaces – Dog is introduced to a wider range of surfaces such as wood, concrete, grass, or pavement.
Inaccessible Hides– Introduces true inaccessible hides with the dog learning to show clear behavior changes and sustained alerts.
Here’s What We’ll Cover:
Distance – Dog can work at significant distances (20+ feet), using odor problem-solving skills with little handler input.
Exterior – Dog works off-leash in challenging outdoor environments, dealing with wind, elevation changes, and natural distractions.
Not So Helpful Handler – Dog confidently solves odor problems without relying on handler direction, even if the handler creates false pressure or stands in the wrong spot.
Ground Hides – Dog must work through difficult terrain (gravel, mulch, grass) to locate small, well-concealed ground hides.
Here’s What We’ll Cover:
Distance – Dog handles complex distance problems in expansive areas, navigating distractions and multiple scent puzzles with full independence.
Exterior – Searches span large, unpredictable areas with complex scent movement and multiple hide types (e.g., elevation, buried, or layered hides).
Not So Helpful Handler – Dog excels despite handler interference (intentional or not), maintaining focus and precision regardless of human input.
Ground Hides – Complex ground hides are part of layered or converging scent puzzles, with minimal visual clues and high distraction environments.
